Fundacion Pa Promove Paternidad Responsabel-Famia Planea Aruba
Organization Description History:
Famia Planea, also known as Foundation for the Promotion of Responsible Parenthood Aruba (SBVO) was officially established on November 24, 1970 and began offering services on July 1, 1970.
In the sixties about 20% of the population depended on the physicians employed by the Lago Oil Refinery for their medical care. At that time the company doctors of the Lago had a positive reaction towards family planning.
The physicians/doctors that did not work for Lago were either Dutch or from the Netherlands Antilles and had obtained their education in the Netherlands. They were also very positive towards family planning. Their point-of-view were probably influenced by the socio-economic problems at the time. The number of unwanted pregnancies was at about 30% of the total births. Family planning was seen as an important tool in the fight against poverty and other problems related to the socio-economic status of a household.
Both the community and the doctors were convinced that Famia Planea had to be established. Family planning was initially the most important aspect of the work. At first a big part of the activities were aimed at encouraging the use of birth control methods and the provision of various contraceptives. Gradually, the focus began to shift more towards informative and educational information.
Meanwhile, campaigns were also a part of the activities performed by Famia Planea. The target audience of Famia Planea are all the residents who live on Aruba that are interested in sexual education, counseling, contraceptives and such.
